Underground & Unapologetic:
A Black Queer Zine Workshop
Branding, Print Design, Social Media
In collaboration with Damien Davis and the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art, I designed social media graphics and printed zines for Underground & Unapologetic: A Black Queer Zine Workshop. The workshop aimed to spotlight overlooked Black queer figures in history and offered a space for participants to reclaim these narratives through DIY publishing. The social media posts I created generated strong engagement, garnering over 16,000 views on Instagram, which significantly contributed to the workshop’s turnout and visibility.
For the visual direction, I leaned into a raw, grunge-inspired aesthetic—using bold typography, vibrant colors, and distressed textures to reflect the rebellious spirit of Black queer culture. Much like the roots of many social movements that began underground with limited resources, this look paid homage to DIY zine traditions and grassroots forms of expression. The typeface I chose, Marsha, was inspired by Marsha P. Johnson and served as a visual tribute to her legacy. The printed zines were distributed to attendees during the event, reinforcing the workshop’s message of empowerment, resistance, and visibility.
